The National Red Crescent society of Turkmenistan (NRCST) hosted a one-day seminar titled "Accessible Society" in Mary on February 14th, 2025, as part of its "Development of Volunteering in Turkmenistan" project. The event brought together volunteers from the "Hemayat" and "Sahabat" volunteer centers of the Mary velayat - branch of the NRCST.

The seminar focused on empowering volunteers to become advocates for accessibility and understanding. The program provided a comprehensive overview of disability, including its definition and various types (blindness, deafness, intellectual disability, and musculoskeletal impairments). Participants discussed factors that can lead to disability and explored related aspects.

A significant portion of the seminar was dedicated to practical training in effective communication with people with disabilities. Volunteers learned valuable tools for fostering constructive dialogue based on respect, empathy, and mutual understanding. The practical exercises, including tasks with blindfolds, descriptive exercises without visual contact, and building accessibility analysis, all of this highlighted the importance of seemingly minor details in ensuring a comfortable and safe environment for everyone.

The day concluded with demonstrations illustrating the principles of inclusion and showcasing examples of tolerant and respectful treatment of people with diverse needs. Participants concluded that considering the individual characteristics of each person is crucial. The "Accessible Society" seminar in Mary velayat is seen as a significant step towards creating a truly inclusive society where everyone, regardless of their abilities, can realize their potential and feel like a full member of the community. Volunteers who participated in this seminar are inspired by the idea of actively promoting positive change and are prepared to contribute to building a more humane and just world.

THE FUNDAMENTAL PRINCIPLES

– Humanity

The International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement, born of a desire to bring assistance
without discrimination to the wounded on the battlefield, endeavours, in its international and
national capacity, to prevent and alleviate human suffering wherever it may be found. Its purpose
is to protect life and health and to ensure respect for the human being. It promotes mutual
understanding, friendship, cooperation and lasting peace amongst all peoples.

– Impartiality

It makes no discrimination as to nationality, race, religious beliefs, class or political opinions. It
endeavors to relieve the suffering of individuals, being guided solely by their needs, and to give
priority to the most urgent cases of distress.

– Neutrality

In order to continue to enjoy the confidence of all, the Movement may not take sides in hostilities or
engage at any time in controversies of a political, racial, religious or ideological nature.

– Independence

The Movement is independent. The National Societies, while auxiliaries in the humanitarian services
of their governments and subject to the laws of their respective countries, must always maintain
their autonomy so that they may be able at all times to act in accordance with the principles of the
Movement.

– Voluntary service

It is a voluntary relief movement not prompted in any manner by desire for gain.

– Unity

There can be only one Red Cross or one Red Crescent Society in any one country. It must be open
to all. It must carry on its humanitarian work throughout its territory.

– Universality

The International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement, in which all Societies have equal status
and share equal responsibilities and duties in helping each other, is worldwide.
