The National Red Crescent Society of Turkmenistan is one of the oldest humanitarian public organizations in the country. The Society has been active since March 26, 1926. Today marks the 99th anniversary of the founding of the National Red Crescent Society of Turkmenistan. Its long-term work since its inception is inextricably linked to the history of the country, which today has entered the Age of Great Revolutions.

In 1991, as an independent state and a full member of the world community, Turkmenistan ratified the four Geneva Conventions and its Additional Protocols, which form the basis of international humanitarian law. In the same year, by the relevant decree of the President of Turkmenistan, the National Red Crescent Society was recognized as the only independent public organization operating in Turkmenistan, following the basic principles of the International Red Cross and the Red Crescent Movement: Humanity, impartiality, neutrality, independence, voluntary service, unity and universality.

All of this created the initial legal conditions for the official recognition of the National Red Crescent Society of Turkmenistan by the International Committee of the Red Cross, and in 1995 it became the 164th full-fledged member of the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies.

The entire work of the National Red Crescent Society of Turkmenistan was carried out under the motto of the President of Turkmenistan, Serdar Berdimuhamedov, in which he says: "Homeland is a homeland only with its people! The state is a state only with its people!" which  is a clear expression of the wholeness of the country, and it builds its work on the principles of humanity, sincerity, and compassion. These paths are in harmony with the national qualities of the Turkmen people, such as openness, peacefulness, tolerance, and loyalty to the ideas of the new era of revival, to the reforms that are being implemented in all spheres of our society. Fulfilling its humanitarian role, our National Society fully participates in all socio-economic reforms, which form the basis of the policy of the Turkmen state and are distinguished by a clear creative direction.

THE FUNDAMENTAL PRINCIPLES

– Humanity

The International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement, born of a desire to bring assistance
without discrimination to the wounded on the battlefield, endeavours, in its international and
national capacity, to prevent and alleviate human suffering wherever it may be found. Its purpose
is to protect life and health and to ensure respect for the human being. It promotes mutual
understanding, friendship, cooperation and lasting peace amongst all peoples.

– Impartiality

It makes no discrimination as to nationality, race, religious beliefs, class or political opinions. It
endeavors to relieve the suffering of individuals, being guided solely by their needs, and to give
priority to the most urgent cases of distress.

– Neutrality

In order to continue to enjoy the confidence of all, the Movement may not take sides in hostilities or
engage at any time in controversies of a political, racial, religious or ideological nature.

– Independence

The Movement is independent. The National Societies, while auxiliaries in the humanitarian services
of their governments and subject to the laws of their respective countries, must always maintain
their autonomy so that they may be able at all times to act in accordance with the principles of the
Movement.

– Voluntary service

It is a voluntary relief movement not prompted in any manner by desire for gain.

– Unity

There can be only one Red Cross or one Red Crescent Society in any one country. It must be open
to all. It must carry on its humanitarian work throughout its territory.

– Universality

The International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement, in which all Societies have equal status
and share equal responsibilities and duties in helping each other, is worldwide.
