One of the most important activities of the National Red Crescent Society of Turkmenistan is improvement of the quality of services aimed at saving lives and health of population. National Society’s staff is conducting comprehensive informative and educative activities on prevention of communicable and non-communicable diseases. Prevention of tuberculosis is one of the types of these activities.
Treatment of tuberculosis is a long and complicated process. Often patients remain one on one with their disease as the people around do not always understand the reasons of the disease and what the patient has to pass through.
TB patients have a very low immunity and have to thoroughly follow the medicine intake, keep to a diet and visit a doctor on a regular basis. Usually the treatment process lasts for 6-8 months. But there is also, so called, drug resistant type of tuberculosis - DR TB, treatment of which takes up to 2 years. During those 2 years patient has to strictly follow the medicines intake under the doctor’s supervision, pass the medical examination on a regular basis.
Starting from 2013 National Red Crescent Society of Turkmenistan provides support to DR TB patients, to ensure the completion of the treatment course. This support includes home visits or phone conversations with the patients to ensure that the treatment goes accordingly to plan, if the patient has some problems that can affect the treatment process the NRCST staff helps in resolving those problems. NRCST is organizing trainings for the patients and their relative in the Patients’ school.  Since April 2016 qualified psychological counseling has been provided within the project’s framework.
By performing such activities National Red Crescent Society of Turkmenistan contributes to prevention of tuberculosis spread in the country.

THE FUNDAMENTAL PRINCIPLES

– Humanity

The International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement, born of a desire to bring assistance
without discrimination to the wounded on the battlefield, endeavours, in its international and
national capacity, to prevent and alleviate human suffering wherever it may be found. Its purpose
is to protect life and health and to ensure respect for the human being. It promotes mutual
understanding, friendship, cooperation and lasting peace amongst all peoples.

– Impartiality

It makes no discrimination as to nationality, race, religious beliefs, class or political opinions. It
endeavors to relieve the suffering of individuals, being guided solely by their needs, and to give
priority to the most urgent cases of distress.

– Neutrality

In order to continue to enjoy the confidence of all, the Movement may not take sides in hostilities or
engage at any time in controversies of a political, racial, religious or ideological nature.

– Independence

The Movement is independent. The National Societies, while auxiliaries in the humanitarian services
of their governments and subject to the laws of their respective countries, must always maintain
their autonomy so that they may be able at all times to act in accordance with the principles of the
Movement.

– Voluntary service

It is a voluntary relief movement not prompted in any manner by desire for gain.

– Unity

There can be only one Red Cross or one Red Crescent Society in any one country. It must be open
to all. It must carry on its humanitarian work throughout its territory.

– Universality

The International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement, in which all Societies have equal status
and share equal responsibilities and duties in helping each other, is worldwide.
